3 Cloves
1 Tbsp Crisco, lard, or shortening
1/4 cup Sugar
1/4 cup Cider Vinegar

Peel the apple, quarter it, remove the core, and dice into very small pieces (pea‑sized or smaller).
Dice the yellow onion into small pieces similar in size to the apple.
Add half of the cabbage to a large saucepan.
Add all remaining ingredients, then cover with the other half of the cabbage.
Add water until you can just see it beneath the cabbage. Do not fill to the top.
Bring the pot to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Cover and simmer for 2 hours.
Uncover and increase heat to boil off most of the remaining liquid.
